The choice of the type of roof box depends on the use. In any case, keep the following things in mind:
- What are the dimensions of the luggage that you want to transport with a roof box?
- What is the weight of the luggage you want to transport?
- How much luggage will fit in a roof box?
- What model of car do you have and what type of roof box fits on it?
If you regularly go on a skiing holiday or if you plan to do so in the future, it is better to opt for a longer box. A shorter roof box is sufficient for suitcases, camping gear, etc.
The maximum load of a roof box is 50-75 kg (depending on the roof box model). The roof load of your car prescribed by the car manufacturer (see the car owner's manual for the exact weight) must never be exceeded. Please note that you must add together the weight of the roof bars, the weight of the roof box, and the weight of the load. This combined total must not exceed the maximum permitted load.
Roof boxes for cars are available in a wide range of shapes and sizes. Before purchasing a roof box, it’s advisable to make a list of all the items you definitely need to fit inside. Roof boxes with additional luggage space are available in capacities ranging from 300 to 530 litres.
Choosing the right roof box also depends on the type of car you own. For example, which design best matches your vehicle. There are also differences in how roof boxes open. Some models open from the rear, others from the side (right side), and some can be opened from both sides. In combination with the type of car, this can play a significant role in how easy the roof box is to mount and load. A rear‑opening roof box can be loaded from both sides and from the back of the car. Roof boxes that open from one or both sides offer the advantage of a larger loading opening, making them easier to load.
